Year In Review: Appalachia
November 20th, 2019  |  by

It might mean repairing the home of a family in need. It might mean gathering school supplies for children. It may just mean spreading fellowship. These are just some of the ways that CrossRoads Missions-Appalachia helps to serve our cause. Let’s take a look at the Appalachia field and some of the good work that was done there this year.

Based out of Floyd County in Kentucky, our participants combined to log 2,400 volunteer hours of service in 2019. Service opportunities included:

-Home repairs for individuals and families in the area
-Organizing weekly game nights, which took place at nearby government housing facilities
-Accumulating backpacks and school supplies for children in need
-Cleaning apartments at Highland Terrace, an apartment complex located in Prestonburg, Ky.
-Renovations at a nearby church

Eight total groups came to Floyd County during our summer session, totaling 109 participants. That number is smaller than the totals we see in other fields such as Piedras Negras in Mexico or New Orleans, but the work they do is just as significant.

For our full-time staff in Appalachia, 2019 has been a year of prayers, listening, and clarity. While our numbers are not impressive, our God is. We see Him moving and preparing His people. There is a need for the gospel to be experienced.

Located just 200 miles from both Knoxville, Tenn., and Louisville, Ky., the need in Floyd County is significant. Nearly one-third of the entire population of the county lives below the poverty line.

Through our developmental fund, CrossRoads Missions organizes the logistics and support for Appalachia and each of our other fields of service. CrossRoads currently is seeking an influx of financial support for our developmental fund, which will allow us to grow our ministry and serve even more people in 2020. When you contribute to our developmental fund, your generous donations have a direct and tangible impact on the lives of the people living in those areas we serve.
